Buy Huawei P8 Lite 2017

The software on the P8 Lite (2017) benefits from being several months newer. The P9 Lite, launched during MWC 2016, runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, whereas the device that arrived on the European market at the start of 2017 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat by default.

In terms of performance, not much has changed but, in the long term, the most recent Kirin 655 can do even more. The big difference, as I said, is the adaptation of the operating system for different interfaces: the P9 Lite was launched with EMUI 4.1, then upgraded to Android Nougat 7.0, whereas the P8 Lite 2017 already has version 5.0, the same interface as the Huawei Mate 9, with all the advantages that Nougat brings along.

Nevertheless, the P8 Lite 2017 has a more attractive look, more up to date software (which will be updated again in the future), the battery performance is slightly better, as is the photo quality, and the screen is brighter. And, last but not least, it is even slightly cheaper!

The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is a dual-SIM smartphone that features a 5.2in Full HD display, a fingerprint reader and an octa-core processor, and runs on Android 7 Nougat. Its price? 185. In fact, you can now find it even cheaper SIM-free on Amazon.

Huawei has shown in recent times that it knows how to make a good-quality smartphone, and the P8 Lite 2017 is no exception. It looks and feels just like an iPhone. Many phones do nowadays, of course, but with its distinctive curved edges and "Piano Black" finish, this phone looks uncannily similar to a Jet Black iPhone than most.

Looking at synthetic benchmarks, the P8 Lite 2017 performs well when compared to its budget competitors. In the Geekbench 4 multi-core test, the Huawei P8 Lite (2017) achieved a result of 3,237, mere inches behind the Honor 6X and marginally better than the Lenovo P2 and Moto G4.

The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 has stiff competition from the Honor 6X, Lenovo P2 and Moto G4, and it is this that ultimately proves its undoing. While it looks nice and performs well for a 185 smartphone, it's let down in other areas by its easily scratched glass back, its tendency to pick up dirt and grime, and its mediocre battery life. The camera is decent but is outshone by the Motorola Moto G4.

The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 and the Honor 8 Lite are different names for the same phone. Both phones have the same list of specifications, which include the HiSilicon Kirin 655 system-on-chip, 3GB of RAM paired with 16GB of storage or 4GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, 5.2-inch Full HD (1920x1080) IPS display, 12MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, and a 3000mAh battery. The Huawei P8 Lite 2017 was released in January 2017 with EMUI 5.0 on top of Android 7.0 Nougat. The Honor 8 Lite was released a few months later for different markets.

In recent months, we have seen past Huawei and Honor devices be officially updated with Project Treble support. The Huawei Mate 9, Huawei P10 and P10 Plus, Honor 8 Pro, Honor 7X, and more have received Project Treble support with their Android Oreo updates. Now, the Huawei P8 Lite 2017/Honor 8 Lite is joining the list of Huawei phones which have been officially updated with Project Treble support.

Users of the Huawei P8 Lite 2017 PRA will have to rebrand their device to Honor 8 Lite AL00C/AL00X/TL10C B220. Then, they can install the beta Chinese Android Oreo-based EMUI 8 update for the Honor 8 Lite, which brings Project Treble support. The guide to install the beta update has been given by XDA Senior Member Fr0nk:

After having installed the beta Android Oreo update, Huawei P8 Lite 2017/Honor 8 Lite users can choose to keep using EMUI 8.0. They can install the Play Store in EMUI by downloading and flashing the Android Oreo TWRP, installing the GMScore.apk (which will lead to the device automatically rebooting), and then installing the Play Store and Google Service APKs.

XDA Recognized Contributor haky 86 has also released unofficial Project Treble-enabled LineageOS 15.1 (based on Android 8.1 Oreo) for the Huawei P8 Lite 2017. The instructions to install unofficial LineageOS 15.1 on the P8 Lite 2017 are:

Huawei P8 Lite (2017) Android Smartphone was launched in January 2017. It is priced in India at Rs. 17300 ($239.00), running on the HiSilicon Kirin 655 processor with Mali-T830MP2 GPU. The phone has 3 GB RAM and 16 GB of internal storage which is expandable using microSD, up to 128 GB (uses SIM 2 slot).

The Huawei P8 Lite (2017) has a 5.2 inches Full HD, 1080 x 1920 pixels IPS display with a pixel density of 424 ppi. Coming to cameras, it has a 12 MP rear camera and a 8 MP front camera for selfies. It has a microUSB port for data syncing and charging. There is a notification LED present on the Huawei P8 Lite (2017) as well, along with a fingerprint sensor, magnetic field sensor (compass), gyroscope sensor, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor and accelerometer sensor.
